Biography

Dr. Melvin Blanchard is the Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) and an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland. He oversees 17 divisions and manages a medical journal.

Before joining GBMC in November 2019, Dr. Blanchard served as a Professor of Medicine and Associate Chairman of Medical Education at Washington University, where he oversaw internal medicine training and the Washington Manual book series.

A leader in medical education, he was Chairman of the Board of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) in 2021-2022 and previously held the presidency of the Association of Program Directors in Medicine (APDIM).

Dr. Blanchard’s research interests include Gulf War Illness, medical education, and quality improvement. He has published and lectured at major U.S. medical schools and internationally in Japan, Poland, and South America.

He has received numerous accolades, including Distinguished Service Teaching Awards, the Parker Palmer Courage to Teach Award, and the Laureate Award from the Missouri Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP). In 2023, he was named a Master of the ACP, recognizing his impact in medicine.

Dr. Blanchard earned his MD from the University of Tennessee in 1994, graduating summa cum laude and as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA). He is originally from St. Peters, St. Kitts, and had the honor of being the invited speaker for the nation’s independence day in 2007.
