Operating in St. Christopher & Nevis.

The Diaspora function within the Prime Minister’s Office of Saint Kitts and Nevis serves as the Government’s primary platform for engaging Kittitian and Nevisian nationals living abroad. Guided by the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA), it promotes inclusive national development by strengthening connections with the diaspora and facilitating their active participation in the Federation’s growth.

This work builds on key milestones such as the Saint Kitts and Nevis Diaspora Conferences held in 2018 and 2024, which brought together nationals from across the globe to deepen dialogue, foster partnerships, and shape pathways for diaspora contribution to national development.

Through ongoing engagement with diaspora associations in the United Kingdom, North America, Canada and the wider Caribbean, the Unit supports collaboration in areas such as investment, knowledge exchange, and cultural connection. It also produces the Diaspora Digest, a flagship publication that highlights national progress and celebrates the achievements of nationals abroad.

As part of its forward-looking agenda, the Unit is preparing to launch the Saint Kitts and Nevis Diaspora Heritage Emergence Programme, an initiative designed to reconnect nationals with their roots while creating opportunities for mentorship, skills transfer, and deeper engagement with the Federation.

Through these efforts, the diaspora function serves as a vital bridge between Saint Kitts and Nevis and its global community, ensuring that nationals abroad remain connected, engaged, and empowered to contribute to a sustainable and prosperous future.

History

The Diaspora function within the Prime Minister’s Office of Saint Kitts and Nevis traces its origins to August 2011, following a decision of the OECS Authority to strengthen regional cooperation and formally recognise the importance of engaging the diaspora across Member States. This led to the establishment of the Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit (RIDU), within which the diaspora portfolio has evolved into a key pillar of national outreach and development.

Over time, this function has grown to play a central role in fostering meaningful relationships between Saint Kitts and Nevis and its citizens living abroad. It has supported structured engagement, informed national dialogue, and created avenues for diaspora participation in areas such as investment, knowledge exchange, and cultural connection. Through initiatives and engagements over the years, the Unit has helped to position the diaspora as an active partner in the Federation’s development journey.

The development of this function reflects the Government’s broader commitment to ensuring that nationals, both at home and abroad, are equipped to contribute to and benefit from an increasingly

interconnected and evolving global environment, particularly within the context of small island states.
